Default CZ 527 Extracter

I was visiting with the gunsmith who chambered the 20 Titan barrel on my CZ 527 discussing an extraction issue. He got really excited when I forced the bolt forward to engage the rim on a case that was stuck in the chamber. He told me you can’t do that to a Mauser action without causing problems with the extracter.

Am I correct that this always happens when using a single shot adaptor in this rifle? Does this cause any damage to the extractor or weaken it?

Just getting ready to head to Wyoming for a prairie dog shoot in a couple of weeks where I hope to send a few hundred rounds downrange using a single shot adaptor in this rifle.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks,

Gary,
Check the manual. I do believe that my Ruger 77 MKII manual may detail single loading the rifle like that, and it has a similar Mauser extractor. I remember seeing that in one of my manuals, and I am pretty certain that it was the Ruger. That struck me because I have seen similar warnings. I can't really give you a direct answer, but if the factory tells you that you can load single rounds like that and are willing to back it with a warranty or factory service, I guess they are not too worried about it.

I've shot thousands of rounds through 527's Gary and have had no issues. Depending on the case but if you bevel the front of the extractor a little more it helps.

It isn't about whether it has a long Mauser-style extractor or not, but whether or not the front of the extractor is beveled to force the extractor sideways when closing on a case.

This is from long ago memory, but I believe 1903 Springfields and Model 54-70 Winchesters and some commercial Mausers are beveled, but most military Mausers are not. And I think the military Mausers have a sort of a dovetail fit in the groove so it can't move out even if beveled. Maybe that was for extraction only, though.

It is a moot point if the SS adapter is made right...As in Calhoon's, The valley in the adapter allows the back of the cartridge to drop and let the rim "feed up" into the extractor...That being said, I too, have shot thousands of rounds through CZ rifles as single shot fed, on top of the factory magazine and never had any problems.

^^^^^this pretty much nails it.

The CZ rifles that I've seen have extractors beveled on the front side to allow the extractor to slip out and over a cartridge rim.

Default CZ 527 extractor....

Some of the CZ extractors can benefit with some polishing on the 'bevel' with a Cratex wheel. Makes sliding out over a case rim even smoother AND,.. won't rough up the case rim outer edge.
99% of the 7,000+ rounds through my CZ 17 Ackley Hornet were dropped in over both the factory magazine and later in over single shot adapter blocks, both home made and commercial units.

Gary
I wouldn't worry about it a bit.

I don't even put magazines in my CZ 527's and have never had a problem.

Have a great time. Kenny

Default CZ527 extractor

Gary,
I have had a 221 fireball that CZ did have to replace the extractor on but it was a first run that broke. The new one seemed to be beveled on the front to better facilitate single loading without putting round in magazine. But the older ones seemed to not work as well. On old Mauser styles you weren't supposed to single load into chamber because of the lack of bevel on leading edge of extractor.
