I have a Remington 700 short action 223 boltface I just trued up over the weekend. Now comes the question of what to build.

Rem 700 223 boltface
Sounds like you have the 20 Tac and gear already, so stick with it and get a 1/7 twist 3 groove barrel for shooting the heavier 50-55 grain Berger bullets, they would work well for coyotes, etc. but if you want a different caliber then how about a 20-223 AI ( 20 Practical improved) 40 degree shoulder. That is worked great for me. Bill K

You will love the 17 Mach1V....
With the 9 twist you will enjoy what the 25V-Max can do.Lots of fun .

I vote on the .20 Practical
Easy to load, no recoil, you can see the hits thru the scope. Inherently accurate and extremely fast. There are quite a few barrel makers making the .20 Practical drop in now for AR's, Savage, and Remington. Mine are 1/11 twist and I shoot 26 grain to 40 grain with amazing accuracy at around 4000 fps.

what to build
I have three vartarg's, three 20p and one 20 tac. the std 700 bolt doesn't eject the vartarg case very well, if at all. if it were me, I would build another 20p or 20tac and save the 20vt for a smaller action. 20p/tac brass is easy to form, and get. you can get up to 204 velocity if you want. and it ejects. if you are making vt brass out of 223, the fun goes away very fast, as I have now made over 1500 cases. where's that fireball brass when you need it??

Or go the other direction and do a 6x45, 6x45AI, 6TCU, 25-45 Sharps (25-223) or something similar 223 based.

In other words a standard 223, tons of inexpensive good components, depending on twist it can be used for everything from ground squirrels to deer. Some of the others mentioned may do that also but none as easy as the 223. drover |
