I had a 1973 mfg .243 700. Never had a problem with it or any go off.
Sold it this summer. I've had two shotguns fire on me. Both my fault. Old Parker double borrowed from and uncle. Let the hammer slip and gouged my hip while rabbit hunting. The other was a single 12ga 3" duck hunting. On the rise in case the other shooters didn't drop a duck I was going to shoot and slipped off the hammer. Spur buried in the cuticle of my thumb. Lots of blood, I started shaking my hand in pain and some blood splattered on another guys glasses. He yelled: "someone got shot", then the panic started til we finally figured out what had happened. Both times the muzzle was pointed in a safe direction, first into the ground and the other in the air. It scares the hell out of me to look down a muzzle. The most times has been when following others with one slung on their shoulder tilted back in my face. Then they wonder why I follow 30-40 feet behind! A coyote hunter I used to partner with was one of the worst I've been around doing that.
