Default 5.7 Johnson/22 Spitfire/Garin

Anybody shooting one of these? I am and loving it so far; will eventually write up my experiences and share them. Currently using brass from Reed's Ammunition & Research which is made from Graf's basic brass. Wondering what others have found to be the best brass for these cartridges. Any help/recommendations appreciated. Merry Christmas to all.

I think I have a RCBS 5.7mm Johnson forming die set somewhere.
If I can find it, I'll loan it to you for the price of shipping.

Thanks Johnly, but I am having no problem forming them with my FL die. It helps a lot to first re-anneal the cases, plus I opened up my die to a .250 neck so it doesn't "over resize" the necks.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm having good luck with LC pulldown brass. The case volume seems to be middle of the pack. Some of the once fired range scrap I've played with seems to be pretty stretched from the first firing, so this "new" brass is lasting longer so far.

I ordered some Hornady, Starline & Winchester from Powder Valley to test. Where do you get the LC pulldown brass? A couple of powders to keep in mind are Alliant 300MP and Shooters World SBR-SOCOM. My initial loading has been with 1680, which seems close to perfect for the 40 gr bullets in this case.

Thanks for the replies. What does the pull down brass weigh on average?

Was at the range today trying 5 different powders. My best load is 17.0 grs 1680 (basically a case full) with 40 Varmageddon & WSR into the lands. It is giving around 3250 on these 65-70 degree days, and frequently groups in the .2-.3 range. One of the loads I shot today was 14.0 grs of 300MP with everything else the same and it gave 3300 fps and a 5-shot group in the low .2 range. Don't know what kind of max velocity to expect with this cartridge, but I will be happy with a load around 3250 with good accuracy and good brass life. Any comments on that?

I can weigh some cases when I get home in a week, but like I mentioned they are middle of the range from what I've seen. As you know, I don't actually shoot spitfire, and my comment is that if you work up a hot load be careful if you change brass. I've seen a WIDE range of volume/weight and hardness in the various types of range brass I've picked up.

What brass is the hardest, assuming that you mean toughest primer pocket?

As you saw above, I'm going to do a little testing of several commercially available brands (if UPS ever gets the package here), and will let everyone know what I find. My plan is to make up some brass from each brand then load each up at the range until I find where the primer pockets start loosening up. That may be well past where I want to end up as stated previously. I did see load info on the 22 Garin that went up to like 3450 with 40 gr bullet, and this isn't really much different.
