I know very little about these machines. I have an 89 Yamaha 350 2wheel drive quad.
Except for $135.00 carb-clean and tuneup every 8 years, it's been a great bike. It's on it's second battery. I use it when gopher shooting only.

In spite of having a CJ-5 and hating ATVs, if you hunt public lands lots of trails have a gate restricting the width of vehicles to exclude PU and Jeeps. So even though I would get a PU, if you get on public lands you're out of luck.

Can-am makes a great side by side, I have the commander with tracks and a cab and no complaints. I've also owned Kaw. side by side and ok with them. I've also had a few Honda ATV's, around 8 of them I think. They make a good engine and have been at it the longest along with Can-am. I also have one Polaris side by side. (RZR) Honda came out with a real nice direct shaft drive side by side and hear its the cats ass, but also a little spendy.

Daryl, I will give you a trade secret, no more carb cleans. when you put the atv away for an extended the time, say 3 months. shut off the petcock and run until it quits. if no petcock just run until it's low on gas and add a gallon of av gas(aviation fuel) in usa by law av gas can is made to never go bad, has something to do with falling out of the sky. I always use nothing but av gas in my chain saws and weed whackers.
battery tender that not only charges but discharges periodically. I have 6 year old lawnmower batteries that still work fine, not bad for a battery that has a 6 month life expectancy.

I have a Yamaha Grizzly, which I bought used and it works great. Any more they are mostly all making quality units. A lot of the farmers arpound here would buy used Geo Trackers and they did a fantastic job for pennies on the dollar, and they are much smaller than a pickup or even a CJ.

Bob - thanks for the tip on running out the fuel in the lines - yes, I do that as well.
As for the batteries, 2nd battery in 30 years (it's only 3 years old now), not too bad life for them. It was a used bike when I bought it 10 years ago for $700.00, but hardly used. It still has the stock rubber in good shape & I keep it covered. Good longevity, eh!

Us older guys have seen this nearly full circle.
First it was Jeeps, then Totegoats, next bigger bikes. About the next was the trike things folks killed themselves on. Sometime later they went to 4 wheels that stayed upright easier. Atv's came along, whole bunch of sizes, types and styles. About the next things were these utv's.; Now it's back to Jeep sized rides. Sometime in the mix were the argo's to swim with. Anyone have an idea what's coming next? Bob: What did I miss?
