Default 17 vha

I have done a bit of a search but not found much at all regarding the 17 VHA.

Can some of you folks fill me in on this round as to its making and ballistics (power)

Thanks in advance.

Default 17 vha

17 VHA (varmint hunters association) couple members came up with it. Old issues of VHA magazine, if you can locate some or Mic McPhearson (google) have plenty of info on it. It is the 4.6x30 H&K cartridge/machine pistol/gun round necked to 17 cal.
Pretty deadly small round, FPS in the 3000 plus range. 10 grains of AA1680 and the 20 grain bullets work very well. Good round out to about 200 yards and even somewhat further on varmints. Bill K

I've thought about building one many times. The numbers and efficiency seem like it is a real winner. I would grab as much brass as you can in case it gets hard to find later but if I remember correctly if it was Bill that he got a bunch of loads on the same case. Keep us updated if you build one.

If Bowfisher gets out of the plane, he would be an excellent source of information.

Thanks guys. I am currently busy doing a 17 Fireball on a Ruger #1. Lilja barrel on order and that will take a bit so I am just looking around.

Really, if I can find a Browning 1885 Low Wall hornet I might consider a 17 squirrel just for giggles....

You'll find a whole lot more info on here if you'll
use the name: 17x28mm, or VR, or Velociraptor.
foxhunter posted at least thirty loads he worked up a few years ago.

All it is: necked down 5.7FNH case, lately some have gone to using the
4.6 x 30 case as the rims are a little heavier.

Be damned careful when playing with these tiny cases. They're easy to blow up. I made one on a NEF .223 action and opened up HMR barrel. Wanting to find the max load so I wouldn't crowd it again later. I loaded and fired the same case ten times with H110 10.0gr, worked great, upped to 10.1 and fine, fired two I think, next time I upped it to 10.2gr and blew the gun up.
No real harm done, action opened, plastic trigger guard came apart and stuck some pieces in my hand, bit of blood, not much, broke the firing pin and the L lever that holds the case in place. didn't hurt the barrel or chamber any.

Like I said, be Damned careful!

It's a real shooter, one holer, really knocks the prairie dogs well. Think Bob killed some fox and maybe a coyote or two, some chucks and crows. I've settled on 9.5gr AA1680, for I think it was 3460fps w/20gr V'max.

There's LOT's of loads and posts on this over the past ten years or so. This new naming VHA don't show much, that name has just been attached lately.

Good luck, oh, PTG has prints and will grind a reamer. Didn't notice where you are, Kevin Weaver has the reamer, kinda expensive for his work though.
