I really enjoy my 5MM barrels, I have several, both pistol and rifle length. My tests show that any thing longer than 22" starts to slow the bullet down. They are wonderful sage rat and gopher control tools and don't do bad with the Prairie Dogs out to about 200 yards. I also have a couple on Encore barrels for this cartridge. We enjoy it every time we take them somewhere to shoot,

They seem to be better in the wind than the 17 HMR.

As cheap as the .22lr is getting, they probably have a large enough stockpile to actually do a run of 5mm.

The new 17 Magnum should have been a 20 Magnum. Makes much more sense.

Default Remington

I disagree with that!!! 👎👎👎 The 17 WSM smokes any 5mm rimfire or center fire I ever shot! And the WSM doesn't give up much to the 17 Hornet!

Default Was thinking

I know ...dangerous
Thinking that a 17WSM may be a good substitute or option for a 17CCM.
Currently available and relatively cheap to shoot
Fat Cat or anyone else have you compared the 17WSM to the 17CCM side by side?As I get older I seem to think a nice rimfire would be nice to use and actually shoot more.Just daydreaming here.Wonder if Cooper has jumped on the 17WSM bandwagon yet.

Yes Matt, I have and it’s hard to say because it’s not like for like when I’m shooting a 17 gr bullet in the CCM and a 20 in the wsm.

JMO but I think that the WSM was marketed wrong. Seems like they came out with it and all I could find was 25 gr bullets and an 8 twist barrel. (Definitely not my preferred choice).

I purchased a bmag from a guy here that he made known it was a bad shooter and that’s what I was looking for. After messing with it and installing a new laminate stock it shoots better but still likes the 25s best and now today are not as easy to find around here.

Been me, I would have came out with a 9 twist and offered the 17 and 20 gr bullets. Of course Steve would not make the 17 gr available for that cartridge

I just like fast bullets and hearing the hard pop of that lil 17 gr vmax at around 3300-3400 FPS, it is awesome!

I’m not sure what kind of range guys are getting out of the 17 wsm but I’ve had some confirmed kills at 300 yards. No pop at that range, appeared to lay their head down and go to sleep lol. I’ve had shooters next to me spotting turn and say, what the heck are you shooting?

That said, I agree that a 20 wsm would be really awesome, I kind of figured we’d eventually see a 20 and a 22 version but who knows. It only took 60 years before they came out with a version of the 4.5mm Hornet

Fat cat sent me one 5mm case he made. It was a work of art. But the ugly Schroeder brass has served me very well. I was going to buy Roys 5mm to have an extra twin barrel but decided to go with a longer bull barrel thanks to this thread lol

Edit: One last thing Matt, if you get one think AR style. Can you imagine pooping PDs one after another and not worrying about loosing precious brass.
