Like most I began with a rimfire. My first varmint rifle purchased in 1980 or 81 was a Ruger 77V chambered for the 220 Swift. My second purchased a year later a Ruger No.1B. On this rifle I vacillated between the 222 and 223. Ended up with a 223 because one could actually be found. Didn't get a 222 Remington until the late 80's or early 90's. A post 64 Winchester very accurate. Had it about 10 years and it went by the way. I currently have two both CZ 527's one a varmint and one a full stock and both with the Mexico import marks. The little CZ action makes way more sense for the 222 Rem than the model 70's.

Default .222 tc

My first real varminting was in 1986 with a PD safari to S.D. My two varmint guns for that trip were a TC with 14" .222 barrel and a Sako L461 .223 rifle. I still have the .222 TC.

Must be too young to be part of the triple deuce crowd. Started with a 22LR and went immediately to a 22-250 in the later 70's. I've looked at the Vixens and the 722's and 700's in the 222, but have never been able to convince myself that I needed that caliber. That said, I've got a whole lot of other calibers that I don't need either. Maybe some day.

i think the 222 was officially made in the early 1950's, while the 223 was made in mid 1960s. the 222 had a 1 in 14" bore(good for 40-55gr bullets). the 223 have a plethora of bores, 1 in 7" to 1 in 14". add to fact, that the 223 speeds are 100 - 200fps faster than the 222. the 223 ammo is widely available, the 222 is not.

the 222 shines over the 223 is accuracy. i've never seen a rifle that was inaccurate(222). i have seen a 223 that drove a guy nuts. we both decided to sell the 223 and got a 222 rem in a rem m700bdl.

First bonafide chuck rifle was a Savage 340 in 222, back in the 60’s. They were $65 and I saved and had the old man kick in for a Tasco 10X. I was king, one buddy had a hornet, the other a 303 Enfield....no scope.
Typical Saturday, got dropped off @ 303’s house about 9 AM and started walking from there until 6-7 that night, anything over about 150yds was mine as the official “long range” guy. Walked a lot of fields, boy.
Saved every penny to buy ammo.

My first was a 22lr, then my deer rifle in 270. Way overkill but never missed a deer after a summer a shooting chucks. First real varmint gun was a 22-250, made some crazy shots with that gun. Now a 20-222 and 22 hornet. Cant say its better but its different, and different is good

Default 1st Varmint Gun

In 1960 I bought a Rem 722 in 222 with a weaver k-10 scope. Started ground squirrel shooting in the San Bernardino mountains. Sold it after coming out of the Army in 1964. Have had a 40XBR that is used for PDs since 1990. Still is my favorite. But that may change after finishing up load testing for a 20P.

A .222 was my first centerfire varmint rifle. In '81 I was eleven years old and bought a Marlin golden 39A with saved up Xmas/birthday money and odd job money. One thing I remember is how my mother drove me to 3 different sporting goods stores before I found one with wood I liked. At that point I owned a Mossberg 183K .410 bolt action shotgun and the year prior my Pop bought me a Marlin 336 in 30 WCF for deer hunting. '82 was the watershed moment in my gun owning life when the family visited my dad's parents in Pennsylvania. Grandpa gave me a Rem 722 in .222, a Rem 721 in .270, and a Winchester 37 12ga. to take back to Missouri with me. The .222 had a Lyman All American 6x with a yellowed view but I didn't care. I was amazed how far I could shoot crows. Since my Pop already had a .222 and all the handloading tools I was off to the races. I still have all those guns.

I started shooting when I was 8, went through a variety of BB & Pellet guns, then my Dad got me a Marlin 22 for Christmas one year, then a friend who was moving away gave me his Granddad's old 1917 Savage Sporter in 25-20 - that's the gun I first really started getting after the ground-hogs good with. But then I had a young married guy move in next to us and man he was a hunter to his core, and he took me one afternoon to find this wonderful used '79 Remington 700 BDL in .222 with a dandy little Leupold 3-9 Vari-x IIc on it. Got the gun and scope together for $350. I'll never forget the excitement of bringing that rifle home to see what it would really do the first time we shot it. It is to this day one of the most accurate rifles in my arsenal. I've put it away several times over the years, but somehow it always eventually bubbles back up to the top of my projects list - and it shoots just about every combination of components I have ever thrown at it, really well. Loads come together FAST!

I must have killed 1,000 or more ground-hogs with my 222 by now (age 52). Mild, yet deadly, efficient and extremely accurate.

My father passed earlier this year. My young young neighbor a few years before him. A couple of uncles who supported my shooting interests even before that. And I also lost a guy at Church who had always reloaded for me, and I've always regretted not having gotten into reloading sooner as I could have picked his brain and learned a lot I'm sure. He reloaded both my 25-20 as well as my 222 for a while, but he told me early on to save all my brass and I did that for some 15 or 20 years which made it really nice then when I did eventually decide to commit to rolling my own. Now I fiddle a lot with a 22 hornet as well, so I've got a good varmint gun progression... 25-20, which was replaced by the 22 hornet, which was surpassed by the 222, to 22-250, etc.

Good stuff. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
