Cooper Model 40...22 Hornet Questions PLEASE HELP
I have been searching for a 22 Hornet rifle for well over 6 months and I am very picky about buying one. New CZ's and Ruger's run North of $700. Although they are great guns I don't feel like they are worth that so I haven't purchased one. I have the opportunity to purchase a Cooper Model 40 chambered in 22 hornet. Now up until today I had not even heard of a Model 40. When this Model was made I was 11 or 12 years old. Serial number starts with VEGAXXX. Guy says rifle is in 100% condition. Asking price is $1800. I absolutely love Cooper Rifles and although I haven't seen this rifle in person I want everyones opinion on price. I was really looking for a Model 38(I already have 2...one in 20VT and one in 17AH) in 22 hornet but I would like everyones opinion on what to do. Do I buy this thing or keep searching?? What are some of the positives to a Model 40? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

20VT : I did a little searching on the Model 40 with varying results . Looks like fewer than 250 were made in 1995 and 1996 . Seems like this is a pretty rare bird ! One source says it's an Anschutz Model 1730 Barreled Action ( with 24 inch Bbl. ) which Cooper bought and had mostly AAA Wood put on at Cooper . I tend to believe this as all the Reports I saw said the Model 40 used an Anschutz Magazine . The Pictures from this Source show a Black Forend Tip and Spectacular Wood . Prices for those Sold which I saw ran from $1250 to $4250 ( for the Super Wood one ). The cheaper priced one was Serial No. R10X if that helps any . I would check to see how the Rifle is Marked and what is the Type / Quality of the Wood ? I guess if you want a Hornet and it is truly an Anschutz ( and what's not to like about Anschutz ) with Wood you Like ....... go for it !

Dan cooper designed the model 38 when he was 38 years old and the model 40 when he was 40.
I had a model 40 with exhibition grade wood on it. it was a 2750.00 rifle in 1995-6. today it would be one of the 4850.00 rifles. I only took it to the range 1 time and it shot great. then it became a safe queen until I sold it for 2500.00 a couple years later. few were made is correct, seems it was about 100 if memory serves me . nice rifle and rare, I liked it better than the 38.

The 1730 Annie action has rear locking lugs if that's any help...…..and the Annie barrel had a 1 in 16 twist.

The images I’ve seen of the M40 are definitely not an Anschutz 1430 in a nicer stock. I know someone with a pristine m38 in .22 Hornet for sale that looks like it’s probably a higher optioned rifle; Niedner buttplate, upgraded wood and checkering, ebony forend tip etc.
PM me and I will hook you up. TBR |
