Default 17 hornet

I know there are a few guys/gals that shoot the 17 hornet on the forum.

got my dies and brass yesterday and started work today. the one thing that caught my attention was the fired case dimensions. the fired case neck measured .1945 and a loaded case measured .1935. something I have not seen in a factory rifle. anyone else check their chamber fit?

second thing I noticed the clip/magazine is blocked short for the cartridge. what oal are you guys using?

Ok so I'm getting

0.193 brand new Hornady factory ammo

0.193 brand new Hornady brass

0.195 once fired privi par, case formed from 22 hornet to 17 HH- this is from a reduced trailboss load not a full on load.

Just measured some of mine, 20gr Vmax, new .192 to .193, fired cases .1955
Shot some of those Monday afternoon, during a VERY brief lull in the wind, 3 shots in the same hole, plus just a smidge. That lot 20 Vmaxes shoots better than the best handloads in my very best built guns!

If I can ever get logged on to the site with my iPhone, I will post a photo. If any of you know how to fix my problem of being unable to log on the site with the iphone or ipad, I sure would appreciate the help. Sent Jim and Alex both a note about the problem, not heard back yet.

Certainly does sound snug, Bob. More than normal. Even .003" on fired cases is tighter than normal.
Of course, .001" is all a guy really needs, unless his brass thickens.

i'm guessing there is about 1/2 of a thousandth spring back in a fired case. aren't most br rifles set up with .001 expansion?

i like the new hornady brass, feels a lot tougher than the 17 ah brass I formed 20 years ago.

I am going to have to start keeping an eye on threads on this little cartridge, just bought a hundred loaded factory rounds, because they were cheap , guess I will be on the look out for a rifle now.

can't have a scope, brass, ammo or bullets for a rifle you don't own. it's an unwritten law you have to buy a rifle for them.

we'll se if this rifles velocity is like the last one I had, 3750 with 20 v-maxes.

Bob:

That NEF I had rechambered for the VR
was done with a reamer of ;192".

at least half the cases I fired in it split the shoulders.
Ended up sending it to Paul and he opened it to .195".

No problem since.

Neck was so tight it locked the case up solid and had no where
to expand.

Hope you don't find that with your new gun.

no problem with the cases so far, fired about 20 rounds on sight in and a few groups.
thx George
bob
any luck with 25 gr vmaxes in your cz's? Hodgeon's shows top load in the 3260's at 36200 psi. for some reason it seems low compared to other powders , maybe a misprint. my 17 velociraptor shoots them quite well, it has a cz 1-9 twist barrel.
