OT: 22 LR reliability
Hi. Picked up a Ruger Mk II safe queen and need to run a thousand or two rounds through it for break in. There are good deals on Blazer, Fed Champion and Armscor around here. Anyone got an opinion based on running a bunch of ammo through a semi auto pistol?

I've been shooting a lot of .22LR the last couple of years, and by far, CCI anything has been the most reliable brand of ammo in my various .22s, seconded by Aguila high velocity (SE-HV), which isn't on your list, but is on sale at Midsouth for a decent price (Academy Sports has it on sale often, too). I shoot more Aguila than anything, but I shoot a lot of CCI stuff, too. The misfires I've had in the past two years could be counted on one hand. I have avoided Winchester, Remington and Federal, having poor luck with either reliability or accuracy issues, take your pick. CCI and Aguila seem a bit cleaner than the other "North American made" ammo. I don't shoot enough European ammo to mention it, price is always a factor. I DO shoot some of the 'bulk-boxed ammo" but not much compared to the boxed ammo.
Blazer has been very good to me, as have the MiniMags, I shoot either happily, and my CZs and Rugers like them very much. |

IT's been many years since I shot .22's much.
Don't know the ammo these days. Has to be better than what we had in the 50's. Got a flyer last week from Natchez, 5000/box, and buckets of 2500rnds. Worth looking into if you're gonna smoke 'em that much.

I have had good luck with standard velocity Aguila or CCI in a semi-auto 22lr pistol.

Usually I run subsonic in all my .22's including pistols, some say you need to break in a new pistol with HV and I'm sure some need it but I generally start with Subsonic and only break in with HV if I'm having problems. I have a few thousand rounds of Minimags if I need them.

22 ammo
In my experience with the 4H kids pistol program, stay away from Federal auto match it will stove pipe intermittently. Had good luck with CCI 40gr lead both standard velocity. Wally

I generally run CCI standard velocity in my Ruger which is pretty quiet with the suppressor and really quiet with subsonic. Buddy has a 22 conversion kit for his Uzi which is a real blast on full auto with a suppressor.

The only ammo that is iffy anymore is Remington Golden and WW. The CCI/FED stuff is good quality and Aguila is also good. Wolf is an excellent lower priced ammo.

I shoot a fair amount of 22lr ammo in my Walther GSP and Ruger No.1.
The two major brands that I buy are CCI and Remington. The Ruger likes the bucket golden hollow points and the CCI Standard velocity. Both brands have been easier to buy recently, especially in mass quantities. The Walther pistol gets only the CCI Standard Velocity and does ok with it. Any of the vendors for rimfire ammo will have some bad lots, no matter whose name is on it; just part of making mass quantities every day. |
