Big Hog
I shot a big ol' groundhog yesterday evening at 358 Yds. with the 40X 20 Tactical. This cartridge amazes me with its flat shooting performance. 32 Gr. Blitz-Kings and H4198.

The Tac.20 is an awesome round. Back in the earlier 2000's, I visited Doug in Bozeman. He took me out rock-chuck shooting, where I used his Rem. Tac.20.
I think it was 65 rounds later, I had smacked 56 Rockcucks, all but 3 (200yard warmups) were 380yards to 440yards. Most were along a fence line at an even 400yards. The Tac. .20 is a Marvelous round with 33gr. Hornady's (early Vmax) at 4,200fps from Doug's 26"(I think) bl. Shot almost like a laser. 10" to 12" over and 10" into the ever present wind. These are the 200yard warmups.

Daryl:
That's a bit hard on good meat!! Rancher asked me one day if I could hit "that" beaver in the head with my '06. "think so". about 200yds and 100' higher. I was just a kid then too. Hit mid back, nothing left except the hams and had to go wadding in that "COLD" spring water to get them. Sure was good eats though. 400yds is just a good shot for p/dogs on the flats. Never shot any varmints that big. Cheers guys, they need killin too.

The between the eyes shot on the big one, kinda opened it up like a book.
I really miss seeing Doug and his 'bride'. Thought I'd get down in August, but not happening now. Have Ian and his wife visiting at that time. Too hot for gophers in August, but there is always Salmon fishing on the Skeena if they want.

I got out last night with the one Eddie built for me. Haven't shot it since the saubier shoot in August and didnt even know if I had any ammo loaded. Luckily I did.. Only saw 2 hogs and shot once, took his head off as he popped up for a peek out of the grass at around 200. I'm using the 40's with h4198. Did great in the 300 yard egg rack so anything under 300 must be a head shot or it counts as a miss Either that or the 20VT is about all I use anymore
Hog I shot was about 200 yards or so, center of pic at the end of that brown dirt area where the corn was planted. |
