17 bullet weights
hello everyone at Saubier.com. I wondered if you could help me a little with jacket selsction. I have a set of .17 dies arriving soon and wondered if anyone could fill me in on the weight ranges for j4 jackets in their different lengths. i aim to make 15g 25g & 30g open points and may be the same weights in lead tip. Don,
Your best bet would probably to talk to the folks at J4 (Berger Bullets) and discuss with them your intentions. They will be able to guide you in your selecton on jacket length and bullet weight. Since I don't make .17 cal bullets, I just don't have that information. I would have guessed that there were others making .17 cal bullets that could tell you what jacket length they are using to make the different bullet weights.

and jacket lengths
Sir;
for the hollow point bullets using J-4 jackets the 30gr will take the .635 length; 25gr will take.560; 20gr. takes .500 length. I have not gone to the 15gr bullet weight so therefore I would be guessing the.460 length. Have fun and pay attention to the amount of lube you will need to use. Respectfully.....................Chan. |

Mr N. is right on the mark. You can go to 32 gr OT with an 8S or less ogive on the .635. We do a 27 8S as well as the 25 on the .560. The .460 is the ticket for the 15 -18 gr with a 6S ogive.
